d20 Beta Principle – Game 22 and 23

The Sleeth island had become a fortress of last resort.

After the lake had been reduced to a steaming crater of radioactive mud, the Gamma Knights returned to find the once-peaceful sanctuary transformed into a tense war camp. Thisshish moved among his people like a general, his ancient reptilian frame now clad in hardened leather, issuing quiet orders as the Sleeth prepared what defenses they could.

Garet, newly awakened and still wearing Mordecai’s makeshift rebreather helmet, had spent the last hour scouting the entire encampment. When he returned, his voice crackled through the external speaker with surprising authority.

“I have a plan,” he said. “Not just defense. A hunt.”

He laid it out with cold precision — defensive positions, fallback lines, kill zones, and contingency traps. For the first time since the Radboleth had struck, the Gamma Knights felt something like hope. This wasn’t mere survival anymore.

This was a killing field of their own making.

Night fell like a blade.

At eight hundred meters, the sky began to move.

Hundreds of Drill Teeth descended from the clouds — pale, nightmarish abominations of stretched pink flesh over segmented bone, ending in a spinning maw of concentric razor teeth. A single red eye pulsed from within each grotesque mouth, glowing with hypnotic malice.

Paul Best raised his alien plasma rifle, drew a long, steady breath, and fired.

The first shot cracked across the night like thunder. A Drill Tooth exploded mid-descent in a shower of gore.

Seven hundred meters. Another perfect hit.

Six hundred. Mordecai’s Mark XII roared, dropping one from the sky.

The range closed with terrifying speed.

Garet planted his feet and thrust both hands forward, his face tight with focus. With a sharp mental command, he seized a heavy rusted iron ore from the debris and hurled it like a javelin through the air. The bar struck true, punching straight through the center of a diving Drill Tooth with a sickening wet crunch.

At five hundred meters, Mordecai gave the order. Noelani and Vulgaris were awakened. Both were pale and exhausted, but their eyes were clear — the sickly green pall of the Radboleth finally gone.

Vulgaris melted into the earth like a ghost. Noelani gripped her war club with white knuckles.

Garet’s power shifted again — he ripped a large decorative parasol from a shattered stall and drove it forward with lethal precision. The parasol’s metal tip speared the Drill Tooth through its pale, segmented body, pinning it writhing against a steel support beam like a grotesque butterfly on display. The monster convulsed violently for a few seconds, its red eye flaring, then went limp.

The swarm hit at one hundred meters.

Chaos erupted.

Drill Teeth slammed into the outer defenses like living torpedoes. Sleeth warriors screamed as spinning maws tore through flesh and bone. The air filled with the horrific grinding sound of teeth on meat.

Garet summoned his Nano-Guy — a shimmering, ghostly humanoid of swirling nanites — and sent it screaming upward. It collided with a Drill Tooth in mid-air, battering it with relentless metallic fists.

Noelani waded straight into the fray, her heavy gunstock war club swinging in wide, brutal arcs, shattering bone and teeth with every impact.

Vulgaris erupted from the soil beneath a palm tree, vines whipping upward as he used the momentum to launch himself into the air, slamming into the creatures with savage force.

Mordecai stood like a steel bulwark on the central bridge, Mark XII thundering as he engaged a Drill Tooth at point-blank range. As another Drill Tooth dove toward Mordecai’s exposed flank, Noelani planted her feet and exploded into motion. She threw her head back and began her Haka — a fierce, guttural war chant that rolled across the battlefield like thunder. Her eyes widened with primal intensity, her tongue flashed, and her war club slammed rhythmically against her thigh as she stomped the ground, her voice rising in a powerful, rhythmic challenge that cut through the night. The sheer ferocity of the ancient Maori war dance stopped the nearest Drill Tooth mid-dive, its hypnotic red eye flickering uncertainly as if the creature itself was momentarily shaken by the raw ancestral power pouring out of her. For a few precious seconds, the monster hesitated — and that was all Noelani needed.

Noelani melted into the shadows between two shattered stalls, her ta moko suddenly writhing across her skin and armor like living ink, shifting and flickering to match the jagged patterns of darkness around her. For a heartbeat she was nearly invisible. Then she struck. Her first swing with the war club whistled through empty air as the Drill Tooth twisted aside — but in the same fluid motion she seemed to correct an impossible mistake, the club reversing course with perfect, lethal accuracy. Before the creature could react, Noelani vanished in a ripple of distorted air and reappeared directly above it. She dropped like a thunderbolt, driving the heavy gunstock club down with both hands straight into the monster’s pale, segmented body. The Drill Tooth let out a piercing metallic shriek as its spine shattered, collapsing in a twitching heap at her feet.

Paul Best moved like a ghost through the storm of teeth and wings, his alien plasma rifle cracking with deadly, surgical precision — each brilliant emerald bolt lancing through the night and detonating a Drill Tooth in mid-dive, showering the ground with ruptured flesh and shattered bone. To his left, Arkadiusz stood firm, jaw locked in grim concentration, laying down tight, disciplined bursts from his MP5K that tore through pale segmented bodies and sent the horrors spinning out of the sky. When one of the nightmares broke through the line and came shrieking straight at them, Garet thrust his hand forward with a snarl. His Nano-Guy — a shimmering, ghostly humanoid forged of swirling nanites — shot forward like a silver phantom and drove a jagged metal spar, torn from the wreckage, straight through the creature’s center, impaling it violently against a steel support beam where it thrashed and screamed in its death throes.

High above the fray, Vulgaris burst from the top of a towering palm tree like a wrathful forest god. His thick vines whipped around the trunk for leverage as he swung outward in a wide, reckless arc, gaining terrifying momentum. With a guttural roar that sounded like splintering wood, he launched himself through the air and collided with a diving Drill Tooth. The impact was savage. Thorned limbs lashed wildly, wrapping around segmented flesh while his powerful vines constricted like living cables. The creature screamed — an ear-splitting tinny wail — as Vulgaris rode its back like a maniac, tearing into it with relentless fury, refusing to let go even as they spiraled wildly through the night sky.

Mordecai snarled, smoothly slinging his Mark XII Rifle across his back and heaving the compact mini rocket launcher onto his massive shoulder. The weapon was loaded with FireFlush rockets — vicious incendiary warheads that burned with unnatural intensity. He tracked a descending Drill Tooth through the chaos, locked on, and fired. The launcher bucked hard with a thunderous roar, sending a screaming rocket streaking skyward on a tail of fire. It slammed into the creature’s pale body and detonated in a roaring blossom of white-hot flame, engulfing the horror in an inferno. The Drill Tooth let out a high-pitched metallic howl as it spiraled downward, trailing smoke and burning chunks of flesh. Before the wreckage even hit the ground, Mordecai had already discarded the launcher, brought his Mark XII back up, and resumed firing with ruthless precision.

For a few terrible minutes, the island became a slaughterhouse.

Then, as suddenly as it began, the first wave broke. Five Drill Tooth corpses lay mangled across the defenses. The surviving Sleeth guards — those still alive — stood nearby, and their most vulnerable lay huddled in what remained of the old boat-shaped vending stall, trembling but breathing.

The moon hung high and silver above the carnage.

But it wasn’t over.

Far to the south, the sky was moving again. Another swarm — larger than the last — was descending through the clouds.

The Gamma Knights stood among the broken bodies and blood-soaked earth, weapons smoking, bodies aching, knowing the night was far from finished.

Garet’s voice crackled through his rebreather, calm but deadly serious.

“Reload. This was just the appetizer.”

The real storm was coming.

And Melkath itself seemed to be holding its breath.
